The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is a decentralised agency of the European Union (EU), located in Amsterdam. It began operating in 1995. It is responsible for the scientific evaluation, supervision and safety monitoring of medicines in the EU.

 

The 2021 Traineeship programme is now open for applications until 20 June 2021 23:59 CET, with an intake on 1 October 2021.

 

About the traineeship programme

 

The Agency is looking for motivated, qualified recent graduates or students on an Erasmus+ or other programme or PhD students, who are interested in gaining experience and contribute to the Agency’s work for every patient in Europe. The purpose of a traineeship at the Agency is to perform tasks that are predominantly in the interest of the trainee’s training and principally serve to increase the trainee’s knowledge and to gain relevant experience.

 

Placement description

 

We are looking for a trainee to support the Information Processing and Analytics Service of the Information Management Division in the following fields:

 

1) contributing to the design and implementation of the Union Pharmacovigilance Database components 

2) contributing to the design and implementation of predictive and prescriptive analytics solutions supporting EMA’s activities in the context of Big Data

Specific objectives and projects:

 

Depending on the priorities at the time of the engagement and the candidate’s skills the trainee will work in activities under the following strategic objectives/programmes: 

 

1) Union Pharmacovigilance Database:

Focus: Upgrade existing Vet PhV systems to support the requirements of the New Vet regulation. 

Deliverables: Specification, implementation and testing of

 

a) User Experience specification and implementation or

b) Data analysis algorithms or

c) Automation for the deployment of cloud system resources.

 

Timeline: In-flight project with going live in Jan 2022. Further releases planned throughout 2022. 

 

2) Data Analytics Programme: 

Focus: use of Big Data in regulation, from data quality through study methods to assessment and decision-making.  

Deliverables: Specification, implementation and testing of:

 

a) Reports or

b) Data analysis algorithms or

c) Automation for the deployment of cloud system resources. 

 

TimeLine: Project to start in July 2021, 1st phase to deliver in Dec 2021. Further releases planned throughout 2022.

Learning outcomes:

We will help you:

 

  • Increase your knowledge in any one of the challenging areas of focus for the Information Processing and Analytics service whilst getting to know how the Agency works and discovering the challenges in the Pharmaceutical pharmacovigilance activity. 
  • Join the Agency and participate in the launch of ongoing Data Analytics initiatives such as the use of Big Data for patient-focused regulatory activities.  
  • Share your academic knowledge and your perspectives related to Big Data, UI design or Cloud infrastructure architecture.
  • Settle in an experienced, international team and have the opportunity to meet our stakeholders and vendors. 

Eligibility criteria

 

To be eligible for consideration for this placement, you are required to:

 

  1. enjoy full rights as a citizen of a European Union Member State or Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway;
  2. possess a university degree in computer science, information management, physics or mathematics (minimum of three years or more) that must have been obtained within the last 12 months (graduated between 01 May 2020 and 31 May 2021) or be a university student on an Erasmus + or a similar programme or a PhD student.
  3. a thorough knowledge of English (at least level C1) and good knowledge of other official EU language (at least B2) of the Common European Framework for Languages

 

For criteria 1 and 2, you will be required to provide proof in the application form and at the interview stage. Failing to present these documents may result in the disqualification from the procedure.

Additional skills

 

In addition to the eligibility criteria, you will have:

 

  • Software development experience using one or
  • more of the following programming languages: Java, Javascript, Typescript, R, Python. Data science techniques.

Conditions of traineeship

 

The traineeship is offered for 10 months (1 October 2021 – 31 July 2022) and takes place at the Agency’s premises in Amsterdam. Traineeships are offered for either full-time or part-time (80% or 50%) combined with university studies.

The Agency pays a monthly stipend of €1,361.17 for a full-time traineeship (reduced accordingly for 80% or 50%) and a travel contribution upon joining and leaving the Agency.

Each trainee will have a mentor at the Agency who will guide the trainee through the programme.
